Sand art is what the tide and the wind leave behind on a Hebridean beach once the water has gone: ripples, ridges, river channels, and the fine dark lines where mineral grains have separated out from the shell sand. It lasts a matter of hours before the next tide erases it, which is why almost none of these patterns has ever been seen twice.
Most of these images were made on the beaches of west Harris, where the sand is pale enough for the patterns to read clearly.
