Scarista (Sgarasta) is a long, open beach on the south west coast of the Isle of Harris, several miles south of Luskentyre on the A859. It faces the full weight of the Atlantic, which makes it one of the best surf beaches in the Outer Hebrides and a very different proposition from the sheltered turquoise of Luskentyre.
Getting there and what to expect
The A859 runs along the top of the beach, so it is one of the easier beaches on Harris to reach, with parking in laybys and a small area near the church. Behind the sand lies machair and the links of the Isle of Harris Golf Club, a nine hole course laid out along the dunes with what is arguably the best view of any course in Scotland.
Surf, tides and safety
Scarista picks up Atlantic swell and can produce a serious wave. There are rip currents and no lifeguard at any time of year, so it suits experienced surfers rather than casual swimmers. At low tide the beach is enormous and makes a fine long walk. Check the tide times below before setting out.
